Jack Dempsey was a famous American boxer who held the world heavyweight title from 1919 to 1926. Jack was born in Manassa, Colorado on June 24, 1895. Jack died at age 87 on May 31, 1983. He had died of natural causes, with his wife Deanna at his side, his last words he told her were... "Don't worry honey, I'm too mean to die." Jack was born with the name William Harrison Dempsey. Today he is also known as Kid Blackie, and Manassa Mauler. His childhood was rough. Jack's father had a hard time finding work so his family moved around ofter. He even dropped out of grade school to find work to help support his family. At age 16 Jack went on his own. He was suffering from poverty and had to sleep in hobo camps. Despite all he went through growing up, one thing came out of it. He realized that he had a talent for fighting. From that day forward Jack and his brother began training to make Jack into a professional boxer. He began in 1919 when he won the world's heavyweight title on July 4. It was a match that made history. He fought against the title holder Jess Willard. The first round of the fight was the most brutal in boxing history. He left Jess with a broken cheekbone, broken jaw, several teeth knocked out, partial hearing loss in one ear, and broken ribs. His influences in life was his family. Quinton grew up in a poor family just like Jack and didnt have much of an education. So he decided to fight to make money to support his family.
